The Hercules Inlet challenge · 18 November 2022

We don’t think anyone in our community should have to go hungry. That’s why we provide three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. We are part of a nationwide network of Foodbanks, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.

The boarders and staff here at West Buckland School are undertaking a massive challenge in Parker’s on the weekend of the 19th November.

We are going to cycle/cross train the HERCULES INLET . The Hercules Inlet is one of the common starting points for long distance expeditions to the South Pole. The distance we will need to cover for this challenge is 702 mi (1130 km).

The charity we are doing this challenge for is "The Northern Devon Foodbank" because no child should NEVER EVER GO HUNGRY. We all know food banks have been in the news recently because of Covid 19 and the raise in bills, the amount of people using them rising sharply. According to recent reports from the Trussell Trust, food bank use has increased at least 13% in the last year. Around 14 million people in the UK are living in poverty and Universal Credit.

Between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2022, food banks in the UK distributed over 2.1 million emergency food parcels to people in crisis. This is an increase of 14% compared to the same period in 2019/20. 832,000 of these parcels went to children.

Every £1 donated will ensure a school child and their family has the food needed for a nutritious meal.
