Vitamin Angels UK has a focus on improving nutrition for preschool-aged children through supplementary feeding programmes. We work in partnership with Vitamin Angels, a global charity that reaches underserved women and children with good nutrition to create a healthier and more equitable world.

Story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. Especially as you’ll be here because you were kind enough to remember our respective birthdays, anniversaries and other significant dates or life events!

Rather than cards and gifts, in keeping with our goal of living a more minimal lifestyle, we would love and appreciate it if your generosity towards us can instead raise money for those less fortunate.

After reading about the principles of effective altruism - doing the greatest possible good with our time, money and energy - we used the GiveWell.org website to select one of the most effective charitable programmes. Our original programme, Helen Keller International, was unable to accept donations from outside the US on the JustGiving platform. So we have now updated with an equivalent UK-based charity.

GiveWell.org ranks the best performing charities in terms of those who:

- Are actually able to spend the majority of the money they receive in donations to deliver their charitable programme directly (for many charities, this is not the case)

- Are the most open and transparent about their spending and the effectiveness of their programmes

- Have the lowest administration costs

- Will literally save a life for the smallest total amount donated

Vitamin Angels provide millions of children and pregnant mothers every year with lifesaving vitamin A and other nutrients.

A single capsule of vitamin A given to children twice a year for the first five years of their lives can literally save their sight and lives. And it costs barely £1 a dose.

Over 200,000 children die each year of Vitamin A deficiency alone. This fact, combined with the extraordinarily low cost of supplements, means that statistically a child’s life will be saved for as little as £7,000. Some estimates put this as low as £1,000 per life saved. Your donation is likely to contribute significantly toward saving a life.

In addition to preventing deaths, the Vitamin A supplement is likely to provide significant lifelong benefits such as increased income in later life, vision benefits, and costs averted from treatment of illness.

Thank you for your generosity. As parents ourselves, being able to make a positive contribution to saving another child’s life feels so important and relevant.
