Story
0.4% of England’s population is estimated to be homeless, which is a staggering 271,000 people. Homeless females only live until forty-two years old on average, with it being forty-six years old for males; this is thirty-eight/thirty-four years less than the average person. Homeless individuals are also seventeen times more likely to become a victim of violence and nine times more likely to take their own life.
But don't think it just affects the individual themselves - homelessness has a significant and adverse effect on society as a whole. It costs the government more money which subsequently leads to higher taxes, it poses a threat to public health, and it presents an increased risk of violence to members of the public.
Since 2010 there has been a staggering 169% increase in homelessness and it cost £1 billion in 2012 alone. Given the current cost of living crisis homelessness is predicted to worsen with estimations that the number of homeless people will increase by a third by 2024.
In view of this, me and my Mum are raising money for the Winter Night Shelter Milton Keynes; a charity that helps the homeless. In order to raise money we will be spending the night on the street on the 19th of May as part of the 'Big Sleepout 2023'.
My home and bed are my biggest comforts so I am absolutely dreading this, but thankfully I only have to do it once. I simply can't imagine what those experiencing homelessness have to endure day in and day out. Please take a moment to envision their life and think how you would feel in that position, and please find it in your heart to contribute - no amount is too small and it really does all add up!
