Wheels for Fields
This October, boys and leaders from 25th Stirling (Dunblane) BB Junior Section will set out to cycle up to 50 miles during the month to raise funds for much-needed fertiliser and food aid in Likhubula, which is Dunblane's partner community in Malawi.
Climate change has had - and is having - a disastrous effect on small farmers' ability to grow good crop yields in Likhubula. Topsoil has been washed away by two devastating cyclones in three years; seasons and rainfall are now unreliable; removal of trees for firewood & cooking is causing erosion and increasing the prevalence of flooding. Due to demand and hunger, fields are not being left fallow to regenerate their nutrients.
In the medium- to long-term, the Likhubula Partnership aims to give farmers ways to organically improve their soils and crops and we are in the process of making this start as soon as possible. Funds from the BB boys' cycling efforts will support this and also provide much-needed imported maize
