During this Lent and Ramadan season, I’m raising £7,500 for APT Action on Poverty, a charity working alongside communities to create lasting change. I recently visited two of their projects in Sierra Leone and saw firsthand how they improve lives.

One project is helping reduce child labor in the palm oil industry by supporting parents with small loans to grow their incomes and training community education champions. By providing functional literacy and numeracy classes, the project has also helped build trust between farmers and palm oil buyers, leading to fairer deals.

The second project is working with local community organisations to strengthen their role as development actors. Alongside building their financial and management capacity, the project focuses on engaging men to take an active role in promoting the rights of women and children, creating a more equal and supportive society, and improving family relationships.

These initiatives are making a real difference, but they need your support to continue. By donating during this season of giving, you can help more children stay in school, support parents in building better futures for their families, and strengthen communities.

A story that truly resonates is that of Marie, Chairlady of the Nyanyawama Development Association in Wonde Village, who used to struggle to pay school fees for her children. Before the project began, she had no choice but to send them to work in the palm oil plantations. Thanks to the revolving loan fund established by APT Action on Poverty, all five of her children are now in school and she can afford their uniforms and medical care. Through functional literacy and numeracy classes, she has learned essential skills that help her manage her petty trading business effectively.
