Running for Breakthrough T1D – Turning a Tough Journey into Something Positive

Hi, I’m Hogie, and I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in July 2024 at the age of 44. At the time, my blood sugar was dangerously high at 30 mmol/L, and my A1C was 12.2. The months leading up to my diagnosis were incredibly difficult, with weight fluctuations and all the classic symptoms of undiagnosed T1D. And the months that followed were filled with confusion, learning, and a huge shift in my day to day life.

Since then, I’ve taken my health seriously, and running has been a huge part of my journey. I’ve been training consistently, running four times per week since August, and my efforts have paid off—my most recent A1C was 6.1, with 86% of my time spent in range. This is something I’m incredibly proud of, and I’m excited to take on my next big challenge: running the Bath Half Marathon for Breakthrough T1D UK.

I’ve been training for a half marathon since the end of October, pushing myself hard with a structured program and planning to complete this goal around my birthday in March. When I discovered that Breakthrough T1D was a charity partner for the Bath Half, it felt like fate.

Now, I’m not just running this race for myself—I’m running to support an organization dedicated to funding research and breakthroughs for people living with Type 1 Diabetes. And this isn’t just a one-time event for me—it's the re-beginning of my passion for long-distance running, and I plan to continue fundraising for diabetes research in future races.

💙 My Goal: Raise £400 for Breakthrough T1D before race day on March 16, 2025. This is a UK-based charity, hence the Pounds! It's approximately $720 CAD.

💙 Why It Matters: T1D is a 24/7 condition with no cure, and research is the key to better treatments and, hopefully, a future without it.

💙 How You Can Help: Every donation, big or small, brings us closer to that goal.

If you’d like to follow my training journey, I’m on Strava (Mike Hogan) and Instagram (@hogiesbrauhaus), where I share my runs and my experiences managing T1D as an athlete.

Thank you for your support—let’s turn this challenge into something truly meaningful!
