Story
We are trying to raise money for a charity that we volunteer for. New Bridge have been offering a bridge to the outside world for people serving prison sentences for nearly 70 years, offering non-judgemental social contact to those who are often isolated and vulnerable. Both myself and Andy are befrienders, writing letters and occasionally visiting prisoners who receive few or no visits from friends or family.
As part of my MSc in Forensic Psychology I have learnt how valuable it is for prisoners to feel like they have a connection to the outside world and someone who believes they can change, which makes all the difference in turning their back on their past and moving forward when they leave prison. Recent service evaluations from those who are supported by New Bridge showed that 87% of people felt better about getting through their sentence with the support of their befriender, and 79% felt better about facing the future, how connected they felt to the outside, and themselves.
We haven't done a marathon distance for a few years now, so we are going to complete the Notfast Ponton Plod, 26.4 miles, on 8th September, to raise as much as we can for New Bridge. The average cost of a visit is £100, so we want to raise as much as possible to ensure people in prison can continue to receive visits from their befriender.
