Story
Holy Cross has sat at the heart of the beautiful Downland village of Bignor for over 1000 years and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The font and chancel arch are remnants of the 11th century church, with the remainder from the 13th century. A comprehensive restoration was last carried out in the mid 1800s.
The church is still in constant use having regular services and being increasingly used by couples wishing to get married in a beautiful and tranquil rural setting. As there is no village hall or pub it is also the destination for village meetings.
Unfortunately, the roof tiles, spire and Lychgate roof have all succumbed to the elements as it sits on a knoll and is exposed to the prevailing winds from the southwest. it is also in a frost pocket and the wooden shingles have attracted the unwanted attention of woodpeckers!
The works have been costed at circa £120,000 and significant strides have been made towards this total through local fund-raising activities including the Bignor Fete and talks by interesting local residents. We have also been lucky enough to benefit from some significant donations and are in the process of applying for grants. However, we still need to raise approximately £30,000.
Holy Cross is at the centre of our small community but is loved and visited by many from around the world who either have links to the area or stumble across it whilst enjoying the South Downs National Park. Please help us preserve this wonderful building for future generations.
