Story
Hi, my name is Angus and I started running seriously last year. I completed my first half marathon at the IOM half last August and then set my sights at my first full marathon. I chose Amsterdam as the location as while I'm not sure there is such a thing as an easy marathon Amsterdam is the flattest place I could find!
Each week for my training I run up Richmond Hill past the Home for Old Horses and its residents always bring a smile to my face. The Horses’ Home has always had a special place in my and my families heart as I am sure it has for most Manx people and visitors from further afield. We have had many lovely days out there over the years and I wanted to do something to give back to all the residents and hard-working staff and volunteers who make the Home so special.
My aim is to put the work in, drag myself around 42.1km and hope to raise some money (£1000) so that the 34 horses, 12 ponies and 10 donkeys can continue to enjoy their well earnt retirement. I cannot think of a better way of honouring the old ladies and gents who live there and have spent their lives working hard for all of us than by dedicating my run to them.
The General Manager Laura has kindly provided a list of some costs faced by the Old Horses Home that your donation will help with:
£20 - £25 – pays for a farrier for a horse or pony;
£33 – can buy a hay bale;
£60 – pays for one equine dentist visit.
The Home spends on average:
£11,000 a year on hay;
£10,000 a year on vet bills and prescriptions;
£7,000 a year on lime & fertiliser.
The Horses’ Home does not receive any government funding and is completely reliant on the kind generosity of people like you to keep running. A donation of any size would be greatly appreciated as it will allow the wonderful staff and volunteers to continue to give these cherished residents the retirement they deserve.
