Story

Hope-a-thon for Hollie – Supporting the Children’s Cancer Unit Charity

We’re the Second Year Adult Nursing Cohort at Ulster University, Magee Campus, and this week we’re coming together to support a cause that means the world to us.

International Nurses Day falls on 12th May, and in celebration, we’re holding a special fundraiser event to reflect on the power of care, compassion, community and collaboration. We’ll be hosting a sponsored Hope-a-thon on campus Tuesday 13th May to raise vital funds for the Children’s Cancer Unit Charity

This charity is especially meaningful to us, as one of our fellow student nurses, Laura Brady, received incredible support from them during an unimaginably difficult time.

In October 2018, Laura’s daughter, Hollie Brady, was diagnosed with Stage 4 terminal brain cancer (Glioblastoma) at just five years old. Despite going through 18 rounds of chemotherapy, six weeks of radiotherapy, and 30 anaesthetics, Hollie sadly passed away in November 2019, aged just six.

Throughout Hollie’s journey, the Children’s Cancer Unit Charity was there - offering support in hospital and at home. This fundraiser is in Hollie’s memory, to help the charity continue its essential work for other children and families facing similar challenges

As student nurses, we’re inspired by the incredible care teams that supported Hollie. By raising money, we hope to help future nurses and families receive the same level of care and kindness.

Please support us by donating whatever you can. Every penny goes directly to the Children’s Cancer Unit Charity and makes a real difference.

Thank you for being part of our Hope-a-thon, and for bringing light and hope to others.
