Our Story

A few of us Hinkley Point C folk (Jo Manley, Emma Chorley, Chloe Davies, Laura Jones, and Ross Pettigrew) decided to to get together and try and raise a half-decent amount of money in support of the fantastic Alzheimer's Society (currently EDF (UK)'s company charity partner) and the vital work it does in supporting those with Alzheimer's, dementia, and those that provide care for loved ones suffering from these incredibly cruel and heart-breaking afflictions.

We're committing to undertake a 3 day (with a day travelling at either end) trek in the mountains of the Istrian Peninsula, in the south west of Croatia. EDF (UK) has footed the bill for the registration fee (£250 each) and each member of the team will be making a personal donation of £500 to cover travel and accommodation costs). As a team, we're aiming to raise at least £9000, and that's where you come in. Please dig deep and give generously.

Alzheimer's and dementia are conditions that are likely to affect you, or a loved one, at some point in your life.

We've added a few personal messages here in support of our fundraising efforts.

"I'm raising money for Alzheimer's Society who are working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives.

There are a number of reasons why I'm taking on this challenge to raise money. Firstly, I have witnessed family and friends living with the effects of this cruel disease - family who have devoted themselves to caring for loved ones for years, whilst the person they know changes before their eyes - grappling with memory loss, confusion, difficulty communicating, frustration and more.

Secondly, there are some key facts driving me to raise money:

* There is no cure yet for dementia.

* 1 in 3 people born today will develop dementia in their lifetime.

* Dementia affects everyone, but women are more likely to develop dementia and as women make up the majority of unpaid carers, are more likely to care for someone with it.

Finally, giving to Alzheimer's Society has a very real, practical impact for both people living with dementia and for their families. Here are some examples:

* Helping people to stay independent and safe at home

* Running support groups

* Providing a helpline and practical advice on care, finances and daily challenges

* Investing in research to improve treatment, care and prevention.

The charity helps those living with dementia today and provides hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding ground-breaking research, and that is why I want to support their cause.

Personally, the challenge will be huge. I'm strong on the uphill sections, but with two knees that have a habit of dislocating, the downhill stretches will really test me!!"

- Jo Manley

"Four years ago I lost my mum to complications related to Alzheimer's and vascular dementia. She was 70 years old when she died, in a nursing home. She had only been formally diagnosed a couple of years earlier but we think the symptoms started appearing in her mid or early sixties. She went downhill very fast following the diagnosis.

It's vitally important that people understand what Alzheimer's does to a loved one. People can often hold the misconception that people with Alzheimer's become forgetful and they just need someone to help guide them. Alzheimer's is a degenerative neurological condition that can utterly alter a sufferers personality turning them into a completely different person who doesn't recognise their own family resulting in most interactions being aggressive, or even violent. This makes it increasingly difficult for loved ones to provide care and that's one of the reasons that the work of Alzheimer's Society is so important to me.

If I'm being completely honest, although it was devastating when I learnt my mum had passed away, there was also a huge amount of relief. My mum had worked at as a carer in a home for many years. She was very aware of these conditions and would not have wanted to suffer through this.

Alzheimer's Society can help those struggling to care for loved ones. The relief it can provide is lifesaving and should not be taken for granted.

All of this has inspired me to go the extra mile (literally) to raise some much needed funds in support of this critical lifeline. Please dig deep!"

- Ross Pettigrew

"When I signed up for a 26-mile Jurassic Coast trek in 2026, it felt like a small thing I could do to make a small difference. One severe weather warning, strong winds and torrential rain later, we found ourselves trekking a shortened 13-mile route, utterly soaked and battered by the elements. Somehow, we finished it still smiling (umbrella hats intact!).

When a three-day mountain trek in Croatia for 2027 was suggested, I was all in. That was quickly followed by plenty of doubts (and maybe some excuses). Could we really raise that much money? Could we trek for three days through the Croatian mountains? Could I really take five days away from normal life?

But there was one very good reason to say yes. Dementia affects millions of people and impacts not only those diagnosed, but also their families, friends and carers. They didn't make that choice and they don't get to opt out when things get tough. Listening to friends and colleagues share their experiences has shown me just how important the support provided by Alzheimer's Society can be.

Since signing up, we've already raised over £1,000 and, and heard stories about why this cause means so much to so many people. You don't need to have been personally affected to recognise it's a cause worth supporting.

So here we go: signed up, paid up, training underway, and aiming to smash our fundraising target. Whether you can sponsor the trek, support one of our fundraising events, or simply help spread the word, every bit of support helps us get closer to making a real difference."
