Hi, my name is Lauren,

As a newly qualified dental hygienist with over eight years of experience as a dental nurse, having had the privilege of working alongside dentists, hygienists, and specialists.

During my dental hygiene degree, this led me to complete a university placement on an oncology ward, where I witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of oral cancer. Yet, despite its severity, oral cancer remains under-recognised and under-discussed.

Dental hygienists play a critical role in the early detection and prevention of oral cancer. Through regular screenings, we examine the mouth, gums, tongue, and throat for abnormalities like lumps, sores, or discolouration. Early detection is key to successful treatment and can be life-saving. We also work to identify risk factors, such as smoking, heavy alcohol use, and HPV infection, educating patients on how to reduce their risk.

Our mission extends beyond the dental chair. We empower patients with the knowledge to perform self-examinations at home, promoting habits that safeguard their oral health. For those who have battled oral cancer, we provide ongoing monitoring and support to prevent recurrence and manage their oral health during and after treatment.

This is why I am running the London Landmarks Half Marathon on Sunday, April 6th, 2025, to raise awareness and funds for The Mouth Cancer Foundation. This incredible charity supports those affected by mouth, throat, and other head and neck cancers, offering vital assistance and information to patients, families, and careers.
