Story

Why on Earth am I doing this?

1. You are never too old to learn a new skill. Not that I am likely to put this one to use ever again!

2. I don’t like heights. Maybe this will help me get over this, although I have left it a bit late.

3. Most importantly, I am participating in the Dorchester Festival Abseil 2026 to support two great charities: Be Free Young Carers and Dorchester Abbey.

The Charities:

Championing Young Carers, Be Free Young Carers is an independent charity based in Oxfordshire dedicated to supporting young carers. With a specific focus on children and teenagers aged 8 to 17 who are responsible for caring for loved ones, the charity works tirelessly to create meaningful and enduring change in their lives. Through their efforts, young carers are given the opportunity to reclaim aspects of their childhood, develop greater self-confidence, and flourish within their communities.

A People-Centred Approach is at the heart of everything that Be Free Young Carers does. Their work is rooted in building strong, personal connections with the young carers they support, as well as with their families, schools, and local communities. Relationships also extend to their own team, volunteers, and partners—many of whom possess valuable lived experience. The charity fosters a welcoming culture that encourages everyone involved to bring their whole selves to their work, ensuring that authenticity and inclusion are central to their mission.

Dorchester Abbey has been a site of mission and hospitality since the establishment of its first Christian church building during the ‘Dark Ages’. These founding principles remain fundamental to the Abbey’s identity and continue to guide the community today, keeping mission and welcome at the heart of their collective life.

Call to action:

I invite you to join me in making a difference by supporting my fundraising goal of £500 for these incredible causes through your generous donations. Together we can help empower young carers and sustain the vital work of Dorchester Abbey as we embark on this thrilling adventure at the Dorchester Festival Abseil on May 2nd, 2026.
