Story
Two years ago, after completing the final Pedal4Pounds charity cycle ride to Cardiff, I decided it was time to retire from long-distance charity cycling.
I'd been fortunate enough to take part in every Pedal4Pounds ride organised by Huddersfield Town Football Club, helping to raise money for a wide range of worthwhile causes. They were fantastic events, but age and a dodgy knee were starting to catch up with me, so Cardiff, as the last P4P ride organised by the club, seemed like the perfect place to call it a day.
Then along came a reason to get back in the saddle.
Former Huddersfield Town and Ipswich Town player Marcus Stewart has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a devastating condition that affects thousands of people and currently has no cure.
To support the fight against MND, a group of former Pedal4Pounds riders have organised a new challenge: a 225-mile cycle ride from Ipswich to Huddersfield over three days. The route links two clubs Marcus represented during his career and will raise funds for the Darby Rimmer Foundation, which supports vital research into MND.
Some causes are bigger than a dodgy knee, advancing years and common sense. The opportunity to support Marcus, contribute to MND research and ride alongside old friends from the Pedal4Pounds community persuaded me that I had one final challenge left in me.
So this is it: one last time.
Over three days, I'll be cycling approximately 225 miles, testing both my fitness and my determination. While it will certainly be a challenge for me, it is nothing compared to the challenges faced every day by people living with MND and their families.
Every penny raised will help support research that aims to improve treatments and, ultimately, find a cure for this cruel disease.
If you are able to support me, I would be incredibly grateful. Whether it's £5, £10 or more, every donation will help make a difference.
