Quality Moments Matter

John Moult – A Son Remembered

Let me start by introducing myself: My name is Ian Moult, a lifelong Salopian born in Morda, near Oswestry, currently living down the road in Pant.

My son John was only 14 when he was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Despite surgery and chemotherapy he died 10 days after his 16th birthday. His birthday and his final days were spent at Hope House. It really is an unbelievable place. To witness what they do at first hand is both heart-breaking and heart-warming. It’s a very special place, with very special people.

I have supported Hope House since 2011 by running a small annual charity event and having several tickets in the weekly lottery.

Occasionally, I would do something extra. A few years ago, I grew my hair and beard for 100 days and under the rather obvious banner of "Haircut 100", had it all shaved off by some over enthusiastic work colleagues.

A couple of years ago, Hope House introduced their Quality Moment Matters campaign - during a 36-hour donation marathon, every £1 donated to the charity is doubled by a process of match-funding, ensuring that one donation has twice the impact.

The campaign this year is on the 22nd and 23rd November. As a regular supporter, I was invited to be a Champion Fund-Raiser and so I now allow the money I raise to accumulate and donate it all during the 36-hour event. But that left the question of how to raise a substantial sum from one event this year….

I am at the age where I have a bit of a bucket list. As I live just on the English side of the border, I quite fancied doing a sponsored walk across Wales to the coast near Barmouth. I got as far as planning the route a few years ago, but that was about it. This year I looked again at the walk and realised that my planned route across Wales was almost the same distance as a walk from Hope House, England to its Welsh equivalent - Tŷ Gobaith, Groesynydd near Conwy.

The plan is to complete the walk – which has never been done before - over 5 days, starting with a send-off from Hope House on Monday 12th October. It’s not a race, so I may take longer.

On the way, I will take photos of my journey and send a daily report to the PR team at Hope House in order to publicise the walk and engage their followers on Social Media etc. I have a small motorhome so this will act as my support vehicle during the day and my bed at night.

Hope House relies 100% on your support. If you do nothing else, please join the House Hope Lottery today. It’s only £1 a week.

In addition to the money I am raising and will be donating via "Quality Moments Matter" You can also donate via this Just Giving page, not forgetting to add gift aid if you are a tax payer.

Together we can all make a difference.

Thank you for your support
