Ibstock Great House Read For Refugees 2025

Ibstock Place School is raising money for UK for UNHCR

Sponsored read

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency leads the response to refugee protection across the world. This work relies on donations so thank you for standing with refugees and making their protection possible. UK for UNHCR is the UN Refugee Agency’s national partner for the United Kingdom.

Story

In 2022 we started the national Read For Refugees supported by the School Library Association (SLA), reading and fundraising as much as possible for the UN Refugee Agency during the Easter break.

Sadly three years later, conflict, climate change, natural disasters and fear of persecution continue to force people to flee.

So for the fourth year running our whole school is reading for four weeks for individual prizes, House glory and, critically, to raise money for refugees around the world.

We know from one of our favourite books 'Seven Million Sunflowers' by local writer Malcolm Duffy that in just one country alone (Ukraine), over seven million people have been forced to leave home.

The first line of Somali refugee poet Warsan Shire's heartbreaking poem 'Home' sums up why we feel compelled to support: 'no one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark'.

The UN Refugee Agency supports refugees from the beginning of a crisis through the months and often years that they are displaced from their homes. It delivers life-saving aid and protection in emergencies, advocates for improved asylum laws and systems so displaced people can access their rights, and helps find long-term solutions so they can return home once safe to do so or build a future in a new country.

Please help us to help them by sponsoring us. Thank you
