We are Ovarian Cancer Action. 🩵 As the UK's leading ovarian cancer research charity, we’re working to change that. By finding new and better ways to prevent, treat and detect ovarian cancer, we will ensure a future where no woman dies of ovarian cancer.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. Did you know - each day in the UK 21 women are diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, meaning each year, 7500 women in the UK each each receive this diagnosis. That is why we are aiming to raise £7500.

Lloyds Story:

During May 2022 our dear friend Louisa Lloyd started to experience stomach cramps, bleeding and fatigue. She put this down to just having "bad periods". She ignored these signs and symptoms, but whilst travelling in the Bahamas she started to experience pain in her right shoulder. She soon realised that this always occurred around her ovulation time.

Scared and alone, she cut her trip short and returned to the UK. Blood tests revealed some abnormalities and raised markers. She was sent for further tests due to a significant loss in appetite. An ultrasound scan revealed a complex cyst on her right ovary, and she was informed by the Gynecologist she would need an operation that her right and potentially left ovary would need to be removed.

Lloydy was sent for further CT and MRI scans the week after. On the 4th November, she met with her Gynecologist for what she thought was to discuss the above operation. Her world fell apart when the scans confirmed she had stage 3C Ovarian Cancer.

All at the age of 34.

Initially she was told she would have chemotherapy, but due to the size of the tumour, she had an emergency surgery to remove the tumour cyst, both ovaries, womb, fallopian tubes, cervix, lining of abdominal organs, muscle connecting to liver, lymph nodes and her appendix and diaphragm were striped. The operation took 9 hours.

A further tumour was found in her pelvic area, and so followed 6 rounds of Chemotherapy over 18 weeks. 12th June 2023 was her last session. Results show her CA125 levels have reduced from 678 to 17.

If she had gone to the Doctors initially in May 2022 when she started to notice the symptoms though, her story might have been very different.
