We receive few books whose main characters represent the full range of childrens experiences. We believe that every child should be able to recognise their lives in the books they read, and to draw inspiration and validation from these characters.

Story

The Children's Book Project gifts pre-loved children's books to children with few books if any, of their own. We take donations from families whose children have grown out of their books, however few books have main characters which represent the full range of children's experiences.

Book poverty in childhood correlates strongly with poor education and life outcomes but at a very basic level means that hundreds of thousands of children have fewer opportunities to share books with an adult, to be transported by a story or to see themselves as a reader. This situation is being compounded currently through the cost of living crisis.

Every book we receive is gifted via schools, food banks, community groups and prisons to families living in the most challenging circumstances. We make no charge to recipient organisations and work extremely hard to ensure that gifted books will resonate with the children they support.

In the past 12 months we have gifted to 110,329 babies, children and young people. At least 80,000 of these children live in economic disadvantage. We have gifted to over 3,000 children with a parent in prison, whose lives are blighted by the absence of a parent and sometimes also by social stigma. And we have worked with numerous small community groups that work hard to build the self-esteem, confidence and know-how of the parents they support.

During the upcoming Spring term, every £200 donated will enable us to source and gift a box of forty representative picture and chapter books to one of our partner schools . We have been fortunate enough to have been given a discount on all books purchased, ensuring that your donation has greatest impact.

Each Everyone's Story box will contain a variety of handpicked titles that between them, will celebrate the widest range of young peoples experiences. Letterbox Library will curate the contents with input from CLPE and we look forward to sharing the details of selected books on this page. Books are gifted alongside our standard gifting books for schools to share onwards with their pupils.
