Story
For this year's event, the team will attempt to summit the 899m peak, The Great Gable, located in the Western Fells of the Lake District.
This challenge aims to establish a computer lab in Nepal, supporting the British Gurkha veterans and their families. We will be working alongside Q Learning to establish the lab in collaboration with the Turing Trust to provide the necessary laptops.
Q Learning is a charity founded in the UK and have an established school and infrastructure in Northern Nepal that will enable us to set up the lab and maintain the computers donated.
The lab will be used to introduce 6-10-year-olds to basic computing skills and develop their knowledge of computers and their uses. It will enable teaching in basic programming skills for 16-18-year-old students, as well as provide laptops for further education and establish a library system for the use of computers.
The laptops will be refurbished devices supplied by The Turing Trust, which was founded by the family of Alan Turing. He was instrumental in cracking the Enigma code during World War 2 and is considered the father of modern computing.
In order to see this project completed, we require £17,000, which will fund the laptops and additional costs, including teaching, maintenance, and replacements for the next 5 years. Nepal suffered a major earthquake in 2015 and is still short of all the required infrastructure.
