South-coast marathon walk · 20 July 2024

We‘re the world‘s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving and improving lives through research. We fund research into the prevention, detection and treatment of more than 200 types of cancer through the work of over 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses.

Story

In September 2022 we received the news that so many families dread - Dad was diagnosed with incurable cancer. In the November he began Chemotherapy, followed by a Vertebroplasty in December to try to support his spine and in the hope his life could be extended. For a short time, this provided some relief from the pain and discomfort he’d been living with for months. Heartbreakingly, in January 2023, further tests showed the chemotherapy was not working. From that point, Dad's condition deteriorated rapidly and he died in February 2023.

The painful journey we went on as a family over that short period is, sadly, one that many others will experience in their lifetimes. The range of emotions – shock, fear, hope, frustration, confusion - were difficult to reconcile.

On 20th July, we are taking on a walk in memory of Dad, his courage and to raise money for Cancer Research UK. The work that Cancer Research UK undertake aims to find cures and treatments to many different cancers, in the hope fewer families will have to suffer the agony of losing a loved one to the disease.

Chris, Rachel, Matt and Jo will start from Durdle door, taking in the stunning (and hilly!) Jurassic coast, past Kimmeridge, Swanage and finishing at Studland Bay. We are thrilled that Mum will also be joining us for a final 5 miles around the Studland headland and Old Harry’s Rocks. We all have fond memories of happy times spent in this area. Most recently when staying in Studland to celebrate Dad’s 70th Birthday.

The hike is 42km/26miles (a marathon) in length and with an elevation gain of over 1,600m, it certainly isn’t going to be easy, so we’re going to need all the support we can get! We would welcome any donations you can give.
