Walking the way to St.James Park for Mental Health

Iwan Davies is raising money for Head Outside

Walking from the Racecourse to St James Park · 5 August 2025

Head Outside brings people and communities together to champion mental health through the power of the outdoors. Our mission is to spark meaningful connections and conversations for better mental health. Through initiatives like Postcards from the Peaks, we combat loneliness by encouraging people to join community walks, send postcards, and share their stories. Our annual Head Outside Awards celebrate individuals and organisations making outstanding contributions to mental health through outdoor experiences. By creating inclusive, supportive events and campaigns, we ensure the outdoors is accessible to everyone, promoting wellbeing and connection.

Story

The goal(pardon my pun) is to walk to Newcastle, St.James Park from Wrexham to raise awareness for mental health and the importance of getting outside and keeping active. There are a lot of benefits to getting out and keeping active such as better sleep and it helps by reducing stress and anxiety. Its a great deal to me to try and raise awareness for this cause due to struggling with my own mental health a few years back, I wasn’t sure how to deal with my emotions and struggled to see any purpose with my life. My mental health did start to improve once I started to pursue different hobbies such as football, even playing once a week helps take my mind away from any bad day I have for the one hour I'm out playing. I started hiking around the back end of Covid, seeing new scenery and the beautiful views that the Uk had to offer really put a lot of things into perspective for me and how small some of my personal problems were at the time. This past year l've started my own fitness journey which has given me a much clearer mindset and a lot of self love/respect. I'm hoping with this project that I can help people who may have similar struggles to what I had or with completely different struggles that there is help out there and even if life is difficult right now, it will get better.
