Story
The towers of St Swithun’s in Great Chishill, Holy Trinity in Chrishall and Holy Trinity in Heydon are home to the ringable bells of the Icknield Way Parish (with Elmdon currently unringable). The bells have played an important part of the cultural and historical traditions of each village for hundreds of years, marking services, special occasions and national events.
St Swithun’s belfry was fully restored in 2022 and is the hub of the ringer’s activity with weekly practices and additional, tutored lessons. The other towers are also rung at regularly, if less frequently. Monitoring the condition of our historical belfries is an essential part of tower ringing and often requires expensive maintenance.
