“let’s make a difference together”
Building for the Future was set up in 2007 by a group of parents of disabled children with a dream of opening a fully-accessible community centre for their children and others like them. In 2014, after seven years of fundraising, alongside caring for their own children, Our House was opened in Wokingham by the then Earl and Countess of Wessex. Since then, the charity has grown every year, today welcoming over 500 families with disabled children through their doors over the course of a year offering Saturday Clubs, holiday sessions, a youth group, a playgroup and more, as well as support for parents and carers. In 2021, Building for the Future Plus was launched by Theresa May MP, This arm to the charity supports young disabled adults who have left full-time education, sourcing life-fulfilling opportunities for them. There is very little available to give young disabled adults a purpose and so this is a service that the charity continues to grow. The charity relies solely on donations in order to run with no support from the local authority. It has frequently been described a 'life-line' by families with many saying that they would not otherwise be able to leave the house.
