J MURRELL is raising money for Jaxon's Gift

NG Bailey Peak District Challenge · 14 August 2025

Jaxon’s Gift has been set up to support and raise awareness, within our local community and across Scotland, for families with children and young people who have been affected by a cancer diagnosis, particularly those diagnosed with a Diffuse Midline Glioma (DIPG).

Story

Members of the SLT will be taking part in a 10 mile walk across the Peak District on Thursday 14th August.

We are raising money for Jaxon’s Gift a charity to support and raise awareness for children and young people who have been affected by a cancer diagnosis.

The charity is close to our Adam Cunningham and his wife Laura after their daughter Luci was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) which had caused a brain tumour and Optic Pathway Glioma to develop on the back of her left eye. Luci commenced an intensive 18-month period of chemotherapy and regular hospital attendance in an effort to stop the tumour growth and save the sight in her left eye. A consequence of this chemotherapy and associated treatment plan was a comprised immune system which led to numerous unscheduled hospital admissions for blood & platelet transfusions and antibiotics during this period due to Luci contracting dangerous infections which she had to fight off during her treatment.

By late 2024, despite the tumour being deemed as stable, the decision was taken to stop the chemotherapy early as it was contributing to Luci's overall ill health and was ultimately doing her more harm than good. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to remove the tumour or save the sight in Luci's left-eye, and she has been left partially blinded as a result. Despite these challenges and coupled with regular hospital check-ups and scans, this has not held Luci back as she has continued her rehabilitation & recovery over the past 12 months and is now getting stronger & stronger and enjoying a lot of the things such as dancing & gymnastics that she used to before she started her treatment
