Story

C A N C E R - You never think it's going to happen to your child but when they are diagnosed with cancer, your world falls apart, and in an instant life is never the same again.

Our journey with Cancer started in October 2022, when my youngest son Oliver was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of Synovial Sarcoma - So rare that only one child in a million will receive this devastating diagnosis.

Oliver was quite literally thrown into a world of MRI's, PET Scans, CT Scans, Heart Echo's, Kidney function tests, Blood tests - the list is endless and doesn't even cover the 14 cycles of gruelling Chemo and 33 days of intensive Radiotherapy, not forgetting major surgery to remove a glute.

Throughout Oliver's treatment he was the most incredible young man, He never once complained and asked 'why me?' and just wanted to "Get the job done" and to continue to play the sport in which he loved - Football.

Oliver did return to Football, playing in the Junior Premier League and loving life all over again. This was short lived and 6 months later the Cancer returned, causing another devastating blow to our family. Again, Oliver's resilience kicked in and we were ready to fight this battle for the 2nd time. Unfortunately, when Sarcoma returns, it is terrifying aggressive. There is no set relapse treatment protocol but Oliver really did enjoy the 6 months of alternative treatment, continuing to play the sport in which he so desperately loved.

Unfortunately, Oliver spent prolonged periods of time in hospital for various different complications including aggressive infections and punishing surgeries. Both at UCLH and The Royal Brompton.

Despite the amazing care we received, Oliver passed away in September 2024.

The reason in which I am running this Half Marathon in support of Sarcoma UK is for the incredible care in which we received throughout Oliver's treatment and beyond. They gave us Hope, a shoulder to cry on and advise on how to navigate this oncology world.

Sarcoma UK is a national charity that funds vital research, offers support for anyone affected by sarcoma cancer and campaigns for better treatments. It is difficult to diagnose and one of the hardest to treat. By supporting me, we can help change this. Your donation will help researchers find answers, keep our Support Line open, and raise awareness to improve treatment and standards of care.

Ultimately, This is all to honour Oliver and to keep his Legacy alive.

Thank you for your support.
