Tour de Manc 100 miles · 5 May 2024

On Sunday, May 5th, our fearless fundraisers will be cycling the hills and braving the chills (and rain!) of the Tour De Manc to help Mustard Tree combat poverty and prevent homelessness across the city region.

Story

In the space of two weeks, I'll be trying to complete the below challenges:

Saturday 27th April: Complete the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge in under 12 hours:

Pen-y-ghent: 2,277ft

Whernside: 2,415ft

Ingleborough: 2,372ft

Sunday 5th May: Complete the 175km Tour de Manc route in under 10 hours:

9 Greater Manchester boroughs: 7,218ft

I'm looking to raise £500 for Mustard Tree, asking 100 people to give £5.00 each.

The charity has seen a huge increase in demand for its services since the pandemic. Its clients are facing new levels of hardship due to rising rent, rising energy bills, rising food costs and cuts to welfare.

These new stats showing not only that we are in recession but that we have had seven quarters of falling GDP per head simply confirm what charities already know – there’s a continuing squeeze on incomes which is driving increased demand for charities.

Charities ‘reaching the limit of what they can survive’

At the same time, the charity sector is struggling. The Civil Society reported that "since 2022, regular research with charities has found that more than half say they are worried about surviving the next six months.”

I've worked at Mustard Tree for over 5 years and I've never seen it so busy. With other charities in our area losing contracts and/or closing their doors, the pressure on our hubs is immense.

The reason why I'm only asking for £5.00 is because I know there are a lot of causes to give to at the moment, there are many emergencies and a plethora of crises. I'm hoping for more people to give less - to help hit the target.

Thanks for your help!

Jack
