In 2021, our mum, Amanda, died from breast cancer. During the final stage of her illness, St John’s Hospice cared for her and supported our whole family through an incredibly difficult time.

Palliative care is often overlooked and underfunded. It may not be seen as the glamorous side of medicine, but the work hospices do is extraordinary. They provide comfort, dignity and respite to people living with terminal illness, as well as vital support for their families.

For Mum, going into palliative care was not about giving up. It helped her get on top of the pain she was experiencing and gave her the chance to live her life again. We will always be grateful for the care, compassion and dignity St John’s Hospice gave her.

To raise money for the hospice, my brother Steven and I are taking on the Southport 24 Hour Race, sailing non-stop for 24 hours without changing crews.

There are a few minor complications. I have not sailed in over a decade, and Steven and I have not sailed together in around 15 years.

What could possibly go wrong?
