RoadPeace is the national charity for road crash victims. We provide practical and emotional support to victims through a helpline, befriender network, and information guides on the legal procedures that follow a crash. RoadPeace also campaigns for justice for victims and road danger reduction policies that champion the needs of vulnerable road users. RoadPeace won the Guardian Charity Award winners in 2008. Help us make the world a safer and fairer place.

Story

On the 3rd of February 2023, Sammy Phillips (pictured) tragically lost his life in a road traffic collision.

Sammy, the younger brother of my oldest friend Jamie, was a warm and gentle young man. He had always been interested in cars, and had made friends with others who shared this passion.Unfortunately, being only 19, Sammy and his friends were still incredibly young and did not grasp the danger they were in when driving at great speed.

One of the least shocking feelings this evoked was how relatable this was. From as early as 17, I was far too aware of the rash decisions that young men would take behind the wheel. This also poses collateral risk to other members of the public.

Policy in the UK is currently not doing enough to protect the lives of the British public. This is where Road Peace are trying to make a difference, raising awareness to the dangers that are endemic in the UK and lobbying for changed policy.

Sammy grew up doing triathlons as a member of Tri Henley, and so I thought this would be a fitting way to remember him. No doubt he'll be keeping an eye on me and laughing at some of the faces I pull underway...

I have never done a triathlon before, and so this is without a doubt the most ridiculous challenge I’ve ever set myself!

The fundraising target is £3,015 , representing £25 for every mile I will complete on the day.

I can assure anyone generous enough to donate of two things:

1) Your donation will go to fantastic use - supporting families going through an incomprehensibly painful experience and simultaneously driving legislative change;

2) I will grind harder than I ever have before, to do right by Sammy and all others who have met a preventable fate.

Jamie is massively inspiring, and I'm so proud of him and his wider family for their strength and activism in raising awareness. He created the documentary "Drive fast die young" to highlight the pressing issues associated with young drivers. Watch it here:
