Story
Did you know that over 3,000 children in Glasgow are living in temporary homeless accommodations, often in unsuitable environments that deny them safe spaces to play, learn, and grow? Early childhood development is crucial, yet many of these children are missing out on key cognitive, social, and emotional milestones. Early Years Scotland is working to change this through our Rise & Shine Project—a nurturing haven in the heart of Glasgow offering vital support to families facing homelessness.
The Rise & Shine project will serve as a lifeline for families facing immense challenges. Children who currently lack access to education and play due to homelessness will finally have a safe, engaging place to learn and grow. Imagine a cosy play area with soft furnishings, and sensory and educational toys, where children who have known instability can finally feel safe and loved. Themed spaces such as a book nook, construction/STEM play, messy play, and healthy nutritious snacks will ignite their creativity, embed early key health messages, and provide a sense of stability and joy in a time of uncertainty.
Parents, too, will find respite in spaces designed for comfort, where they can connect with other families, receive parenting support—which will, in turn, strengthen the home learning environment for their children—and access essential resources. Our local partner agencies will provide wrap-around support to remove barriers in their lives. This is more than a space; it’s hope for a brighter future.
