Story
Over the course of this year, I am pushing myself mentally and physically - from marathons to skydives, and everything in between - to raise money for Baby Beat, a local charity that have supported Ellie and I through a journey we never thought we’d have to face.
In September, we lost our first baby. We went on to experience a second miscarriage not long after, and we are now undergoing further tests, trying to understand why this keeps happening.
Watching the person you love most go through that pain, while feeling completely powerless to fix it, is something I would not wish on anyone. It is heartbreaking, frightening and incredibly lonely.
As a partner, you want to be strong. You want to have answers. You want to take the pain away. But miscarriage doesn’t work like that. It leaves you both grieving quietly, often behind closed doors, because it is still something people don’t talk about enough. Yet the reality is that so many families have lived this, or are living it right now.
During our darkest moments, Baby Beat and the maternity teams it supports were there for us. The compassion, care and support we received made an unbearable time feel just a little less overwhelming. Knowing that there were people who truly cared, who understood, and who treated us with kindness and dignity meant everything to us when our world felt like it had fallen apart.
Baby Beat, part of the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Charity, funds specialist equipment, patient services, research, training and staff welfare projects. Their support also helps the NICU continue to provide exceptional care for premature and sick babies and their families across Lancashire and South Cumbria. This charity supports families at their most vulnerable moments, and we are living proof of how much that support matters.
I am fundraising to give something back, to help ensure that Baby Beat can continue to be there for other families facing loss, fear and uncertainty. We also want to help raise awareness and break the silence around miscarriage, so fewer people feel as alone as we did.
So far this is what I’m doing this year but expect to be adding quite a few more things throughout the year.
