In March 2025, urgent referrals to children’s mental health services hit 4,576 in England. This marks the third consecutive month that this number has exceeded 4,000.

At work, I frequently encounter adults in mental health crisis, stemming from a lack of support during their childhoods. I am certain that every single person reading this has been affected by mental illness before turning 18, whether through their own experiences or those of family and friends.

The absence of support at such a critical age can lead to devastating consequences in adulthood. Tragically, some children are not fortunate enough to reach that stage. Chronic underfunding of children’s services has resulted in ever-growing waitlists; these services desperately need our help.
