Esme's Umbrella is the charity dedicated to adults and children who develop Charles Bonnet Syndrome after sight loss. The condition causes vivid, silent, visual hallucinations but is not a mental health condition. We raise awareness, create ways to support those who develop CBS and inspire research.

Story

Through the recent loss of my Nan and the desire to run and raise money for a charity, it seemed fitting to raise both awareness and funds for Esme’s Umbrella charity. Unfortunately my Nan suffered not only from cancer of the stomach lining but was tormented by Charles Bonnet Syndrome. CBS develops when someone of any age (children too) has lost a variable amount of sight. It’s caused by various conditions that damage the optic nerve and results in vivid, silent, visual hallucinations which range from disturbing to terrifying. It is not a mental health condition but caused entirely by loss of sight. This loss leaves the brain with nothing to interpret, so it fires up and creates its own images. It is not a well known condition and my aim is to raise the profile of CBS and aid further research.
