At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

I’m walking the Camino de Santiago as period of reflection and try to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Society. The Camino starts at Saint Jean Pied de Port in France and ends in Santiago de Compostela in Spain. It is a journey of about 800km or 500 miles across the varied landscape of northern Spain. If you would like to get a feel for route then I can recommend watching the 2010 film The Way staring Martin Sheen.

My mum had dementia for 8 years. As a family we nursed her at home for the last 18 months of her life. Covid was a very difficult period when she was trapped in a Care home where we struggled to have contact with her like many others. It is cruel disease that slowly eats the soul of the sufferer. In the end mum was bed bound and required constant 24 hour care. It is very difficult to watch someone you love lose all their dignity before your eyes. Dementia will touch more and more people and we need to do all we can to understand this condition and support those suffering from dementia as well as provide help to those who care for them.

Every £50 raised will help 312 people connect with Talking Point, Alzheimer's Society's on line safe space, where a trouble shared can be a troubled halved. £15 could fund production of 12 Dementia Guides. Covering information about dementia itself, treatments, planning ahead and crucially where to find support. £6 will fund a call from a Dementia Advisor providing help at the end of the phone.

If you would be kind enough to share my page with your colleagues, friends and family I would be very grateful. The more people that know about my challenge the more I can hopefully raise for Alzheimer's Society.

Thank you for visiting my page and reading this story.
