James's Ben Nevis Challenge

Mary-anne Matthews is raising money for The Farming Community Network

Climbing Ben Nevis

The Farming Community Network (FCN) is a charity and voluntary organisation that supports farmers and families within the farming community through difficult times, whether the issue is personal or business related. Our confidential national helpline is open every day of the year from 7am-11pm.

Story

James is taking on his biggest challenge yet in October ‘25 - conquering Ben Nevis the UK's highest peak at 1,345m - to raise crucial funds for the farming community network (FCN).

This incredible journey began when James was born without an ACL in his right knee. In September 2021 (aged 5), he underwent surgery to create an artificial ACL, followed by a long and challenging recovery. Rather than let this setback define him, James decided to turn his rehabilitation into something extraordinary.

In October 2023 (aged 7), he set his sights on Snowdon and successfully completed the climb, raising money for the hospitals paediatric department that helped him recover and made his knee stronger than ever. Not content to stop there, he climbed Scafell pike in October 2024 (age 8) for fun. Now, setting his heights even higher, he's ready to tackle Britain's ultimate mountain challenge.

Standing at the summit of Scotland’s most demanding mountain, he'll have climbed through unpredictable weather, navigated treacherous rocky terrain and pushed his physical limits to the max - all on a knee that doctors rebuilt from scratch. But every challenging step will be worth it to support Britons farming families when they need it most.

The Farming Community Network provides a lifeline to farmers, farm workers and rural businesses during their darkest moments will stop whether it's financial crisis, mental health struggles, family breakdown, or the devastating impact of disease outbreaks, extreme weather, or market collapse, FCN is there with practical support, a listening ear, and hope when it's feels like there's no where else to turn.

Farming sustains us all, but farming families often face their toughest battles alone FCN volunteers - many farmers themselves - understand the unique pressures of agricultural life. They provide confidential support through their helpline, practical assistance, and crucially, remind struggling farmers they are not alone.

Just as Ben Nevis tests physical endurance, farming tests mental resilience every single day. The funds raised from this climb will help FCN continue their vital work - answering calls from desperate farmers, providing practical support during crises, and quite literally helping to save lives and livelihoods in our rural communities

Every donation, no matter how small, helps FCN be there when a farming family's world is falling apart. Please support James has he climbs Britons highest peak for Britain's hardest working families.

Thank you
