Swim the English Channel (3 person relay) · 15 September 2024

The Children's Leukaemia Society is a small but essential Charity that covers Wales. It is run by Volunteers only, there are no administration costs, we all do it for love and a willingness to help others. Our aim is to provide help and support not only for the children suffering with Cancer but also their families. Working closely with 'The Children's Hospital for Wales', we endeavour to help all children, who are diagnosed with any type of childhood cancer up to the age of 18 years, to cope with the trauma of treatment and the after effects. We provide a 'Cheer-Up Gift' during treatment and then, once treatment is over, we offer the whole family a holiday in one of our caravans at Kiln Park, Tenby. Sometimes, this is the first opportunity the family has of spending quality time together away from a hospital environment. This can also be positive for their siblings giving them an opportunity to spend precious time with their family.

Story

This Sunday, I will be attempting to swim across the English Channel as part of a three-person relay team in support of the Children's Leukaemia Society (update - I completed this challenge as a part of a team in 13 hours and 23 minutes)

I chose this charity to honour the memory of my mum, who passed away just three weeks after being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.

Each of us will swim for one hour at a time, taking turns until, hopefully, we reach France around 12 hours later. Although I am far from being a strong swimmer, this challenge feels both daunting and deeply personal.

Raising funds for the Children's Leukaemia Society will help families facing incredibly tough times, while also giving me and my family a chance to remember my mum and the great love she had for children.

Many thanks

James
