Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses – who we continually support and develop – provide life-changing care for families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Story

This year, I’m taking on the Leeds Ironman to raise money for Dementia UK, a charity that means a great deal to me and my loved ones.

Dementia is a cruel illness that has deeply affected both my family and my girlfriend’s. We lost my nan - an incredibly influential figure in my early life and teenage years - to dementia. Watching her decline was heartbreaking, and it’s something that has stayed with me ever since.

More recently, my girlfriend lost her grandad to the same illness. So this cause is not only personal to me, but it’s also very close to her heart and her family’s as well.

By supporting Dementia UK, I hope to raise vital funds to help families get the care and support they need during such difficult times. Every donation, no matter how big or small, truly makes a difference.

Now, about the challenge itself… An Ironman consists of a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike ride, and a marathon - all in one go. While I’m no stranger to running, when I signed up I didn’t even own a bike… and I hadn’t swam properly since school (unless you count holidays and the occasional hotel pool). So to say this is pushing me out of my comfort zone is an understatement.

It’s going to be a serious test - mentally, physically, and emotionally too - but I’m doing it for a cause that truly matters. When the training gets tough (and it does!), thinking about my nan and everyone else affected by this awful illness gives me the drive to keep going.

This is so much more than just a race - it’s a chance to honour their memory, raise awareness, and do something meaningful. I’m determined to make them proud every step, pedal, and stroke of the way.

Thanks so much for your support. It means the world.
