A future in which people and planet thrive together isn't just possible: it's essential. ClientEarth, working with people around the globe, uses the power of the law to create seismic, sustainable change that protects life on earth.

Story

My brother, Dan, and I will be running the Brighton Marathon in aid of ClientEarth - an environmental charity. They tackle environmental issues globally through the power of law and policy change at a governmental level. Not very sexy BUT the most important place to start - from the top. This is why we feel their work is invaluable to making the changes we need to see around the world for a better, cleaner, happier future.

Since the arrival of my (James') beautiful little boy, Ralph, in February 2023, I've become even more aware of the potential conditions future generations could potentially be living in, should we decide to do nothing. All you need to do is watch David Attenborough's documentary (among others) for some of the scary facts, and huge changes he has seen if his relatively short (in Earth's perspective - he's 97 now!) time on this planet. I've also become increasingly aware of the good we can do through brilliant charities like ClientEarth. So hope is not yet lost!

Dan wanted to do this with me to help raise awareness, and because he loves Ralph as much as we all do, so is keen to do anything to protect our future environment by, in this case, using his natural athletic ability and length!... its fair to say I'll be struggling to keep up (and failing probably) with him regardless of my many more years of calling myself "a runner". I blame his long legs! I tell him I'll be the winner because I'll be running for longer, so the challenge for me is even greater... he doesn't seem to be buying into my logic.

So, for some context, a little more about why an environmental charity. The worst predicted outcomes, even for our generation, let alone little Ralphy's generation, look extremely bleak. If no drastic changes are made by us (and most science suggests the current targets for change by 2030 aren't drastic enough) with the currents targets set not even being good enough!), by 2050 extreme weather patterns around the world will become the norm, making more areas around the world uninhabitable, forcing families around the globe to move to safer areas. This will have a huge knock on effect to the quality of life and safety of everyone around the world, and likely could cause economic collapse and chaos across the globe. A truly terrifying prospect, and even more so knowing our kids will be living through these times.

At best, with everyone doing their individual bit, the future looks a lot brighter, and some scientists say that any damage done could be halted if we make systemic changes quickly enough. But this wont happen unless our governments around the world are forced to make changes. It turns out they are more interested in money and power than the future generations and our planet! This is where ClientEarth are trying to use their skills to make a huge difference; by using law to make these systemic changes.

So please, for all future generations, for Ralph, for your families and loves ones, and for our planet, small or large donations would be greatly appreciated by all, and recurring donations will make an even bigger impact. So consider parting with one take away coffee a week to make a regular impact. That would only be £10-£15 a month, so no impact on your overall quality of life, but if we all did that, I really believe we would make huge positive steps to avoiding those terrifying future predictions, and allowing our future generations to enjoy our planet and their lives the way we've been able to.

Thank you
