Story
As I approached my 70th birthday, I found myself reflecting on how to celebrate this significant milestone. An idea sparked in my mind: why not encourage the CEO of Changing Tunes to apply for a spot in the London Marathon? With only a slim chance of success, it felt like a safe bet that nothing would come of it. "What a fantastic fundraising idea!" said the CEO, likely humoring his mad trustee’s whimsical notion. To my surprise, not only did he apply, but to my horror knowing what could come next, our charity was awarded twelve places for the next four years! "Since it's your idea, you're running too," he said with a smile. And so began my journey from 10km towards running my first marathon at the age of 70.
Having served in the Army and witnessed the challenges faced by many ex-servicemen after leaving the Service, I became acutely aware of the struggles they endure—whether due to trauma or the loss of structure and community that military life provided. This often leads to high rates of incarceration among veterans. My experience as a volunteer helped me understand these complexities as I worked to assist them in finding employment and rebuilding their self-esteem.
I was fortunate to connect a number of years ago with Changing Tunes, an inspiring charity that harnesses the transformative power of music to help individuals lead fulfilling, crime-free lives. They offer music-making programs in schools, youth facilities, prisons, and beyond—providing opportunities for those who need it most. Their vision is one where every at-risk youth and every person leaving prison has access to life-changing musical experiences.
As I prepare for the London Marathon on 26 avril 2026, I am filled with optimism about what we can achieve together through TeamCT. My goal is to raise £5,000 to support Changing Tunes' vital work. Your support can help us create a future where rehabilitation is possible and where everyone has the chance to unleash their full potential through music.
Join me on this journey where we can make a difference and bring hope to those who need it most.
