James' fundraiser for Advanta Foundation

Gillian Piggot is raising money for Advanta Foundation

Iron Man · 22 August 2026

We are the registered charitable foundation of the Advanta Group of companies. We raise money and award grants to children’s charities in the UK and abroad. Our costs are very generously funded by the Group and we have no paid staff. This allows us to donate 100% of what we raise.

Story

Thanks for visiting my page. In August this year I am taking on the challenge of a lifetime - a full Iron Man!

This involves

Swim: 2.4 miles (3.9 km)

Bike: 112 miles (180.2 km)

Run: 26.2 miles (42.2 km)

This totals 140.6 miles (226.3 km).

I decided to take on the Ironman in Tallinn after watching a close friend complete the Tenby Ironman last September. Seeing the atmosphere on the course, the way everyone supported one another and were pushing towards the same goal, genuinely inspired me in a way I haven't been before. It felt less like a race and more like a shared battle, and I knew I wanted to experience that for myself.

For me, this is as much about mental resilience as it is about physical fitness. I’ve always been fortunate to be healthy and heavily involved in sport, so I wanted to take on something that would truly test my limits.

Running has always come naturally to me, but I haven’t cycled properly since I was 14 or swum a length since I was 11. That’s exactly why this felt like the right challenge, something that would force me out of my comfort zone and require me to learn new skills.

I’m also completing the Ironman with three friends and my brother, which adds a competitive edge and has definitely kept me motivated on the training days when I’d usually let myself have a day off. Part of this challenge is about understanding myself better and seeing how disciplined I can be over a long time period. Especially has 8-15 hours of training per week is usually recommended for an Ironman.

My biggest fear is simply not finishing. The global Ironman DNF rate sits around 8%, which sounds small until you remember that’s 8% of the 150,000 people who are silly enough to attempt one each year. That fear is actually helping and becoming fuel for the days where I am not in the mood to train.

I wanted to use this opportunity to raise money for my company's charitable foundation, Advanta Foundation because I’ve always been extremely fortunate with my health and the opportunities I’ve had growing up.

Taking on something so demanding feels like the right time to give back to those who haven’t had the same advantages. And as someone living in Exeter, I’m especially keen to support a local project that makes a meaningful difference to people in my own community.

The Advanta Foundation raises and donates money to children's charities across the UK and abroad.

All fundraising from this event will be used to support Action for Children charity. We will be funding short breaks for disabled children. These short break carers offer children with disabilities a safe, meaningful, and enjoyable experience with another family, while also giving their families a much-needed break to recharge. The Family Breaks are based at Powderham House in Exeter.

The Advanta Foundation will also match any fundraising so the value of your donation will be double!

Any donation no matter how small will be so appreciated.
