Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My name is James Eder and I'm living with a chronic heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. To understand this more, I've shared my heart health journey on a video series on YouTube Called - Heart Matters Living with Intention which can be seen here. https://bit.ly/heartmattersje
This page has been set up as a thank you and to raise money for Cardiomyopathy UK who have helped me and continue to help many others who are living with my condition. (I also have another JustGiving page raising money directly for The British Heart Foundation which can be found here - whilst they work closely together they are both great charities that have supported me and many others on their heart health journey's JustGiving don't have a way to split donations on one page so I've got two pages!).
In 2025 I published a book called The Collision Code - more information and to buy the book can be found here: https://amzn.to/4l4XfL5. I am donating 10% of sales to The British Heart Foundation & Cardiomyopathy UK. They work closely together I am supporting both as the research and support overlaps - they have both played an important role in my journey and treatment so far.
Some background from when I was diagnosed:
In 2017, I was at a theme park in the Netherlands. Shortly after going on the log flume, I suddenly collapsed, lightly hitting my head. I left the park soon after and flew home that evening.
The next day, I called my GP, who asked me to come in. She checked my blood pressure—both standing and sitting—then suggested I go to the Royal Free Hospital for some blood tests and an ECG (a simple, non-invasive heart check).
At the hospital, the ECG was done, and the nurse quickly called in a specialist. He asked if anyone in my family had died suddenly from a heart attack at a young age. When I said no, he told me I needed an ultrasound.
Once the results were in, they told me I couldn’t leave the hospital. My first thought? But my car is on pay-and-display! Since home was only five minutes away, they told me to move my car and come straight back to A&E. I did as they said—and ended up staying in hospital for three days.
At the end of my stay, I was diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). Around 1 in 500 people in the UK have it. It’s a thickening of the heart muscle that makes it harder to breathe and harder for the heart to pump blood—imagine the texture being more like a coconut shell than a banana skin.
It’s most often known as the condition that can cause footballers or marathon runners to suddenly collapse and die. Thankfully, I’m not a fan of either! So, instead of running to raise money, I’ve created this page. If you’re reading this, I’d be deeply grateful for your support—any donation, big or small, makes a difference.
While I’m not currently on the heart transplant list, my doctors have said it’s something I should expect in the coming years. For now, I’m thankful for the care of my family, friends, doctors, nurses, and everyone I meet who helps me navigate this journey we call life.
