Marie Curie provides care and support for people living with any terminal illness across the UK. Our nurses work night and day in people’s homes and our hospices offer specialist care. We also support people emotionally, provide practical information, and match them with trained volunteers.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I've been taking part in Ultra-distance cycling events for several years now and every event or race was masterminded by my Crew Chief Steve Thomson. We spent so much time together out on the road preparing for or doing races, he was the best at getting the most out of people including me, he mentored and helped dozens of other people as well. Tragically Steve lost his life to cancer in 2021 after what was only a year of illness. Marie Curie provided specialist care for Steve that enabled him to spend his last few weeks at home instead of in hospital, this was so much better especially as at the time various lockdowns were in place and hospitals were not a place you were allowed to visit.

On 20th May I will take on the World Record for the furthest distance travelled in 24 hours on an indoor velodrome. The target is 941kms. Steve was there at my first attempt in 2019 but it didn't go to plan and I want to try this again in order to show him I can give it everything. It's a vicious record taken on in a hostile environment, it requires an effort that's just about tolerable for a while but after several hours its not pleasant at all but no matter how bad I will feel towards the end, it will be nothing compared to what Steve suffered those last few months.

Please donate to this cause if you can, it was a sudden and shocking surprise to hear of Steve's illness, he was so fit and healthy and full of life. Marie Curie's work is so appreciated when its needed, let's fund them so they can continue this important work.

Thanks very much,

James, and the 24 hour team.
