I am running the Reading Half Marathon fundraising for Reading Pride. It is crucial to support one of the UK’s largest free pride events, which provides a sense of community and belonging for individuals in the LGBTQ+ community.

In an time where mental health challenges are prevalent, statistics show that LGBTQ+ individuals face disproportionately high rates of mental health issues; for instance, a study by the National Health Service (NHS) found that 32% of LGBTQ+ individuals reported experiencing symptoms of depression compared to 19% of their heterosexual counterparts (NHS England, 2021). Furthermore, homelessness remains a significant concern, with estimates indicating that over 20% of homeless youth in the UK identify as LGBTQ+ (Albert Kennedy Trust, 2020).

Such disparities highlight the ongoing need for safe spaces like Reading Pride, which not only celebrates diversity but also combats isolation and enhances inclusivity.

In 2024, the cost of putting on Reading Pride exceeded £120,000. Reading Pride is a volunteer led charity, and the cost of our event are sourced through donations and sponsorship.
