In January 2027, the four of us – Jamie, Ellen, Nick and Sculli – will join Lucy's amazing 'Team Carter' and stand together at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, ready to begin a climb we have chosen.

We know it will be tough.

There will be moments when we’re exhausted, when every step feels harder than the last, when the altitude takes its toll and our bodies are pushed to their limits. There will be times when we’ll question whether we can keep going.

But throughout that journey, we will always have a choice.

We can stop. We can rest. We can turn back.

Children like Carter never had that choice.

Every day, children supported by Birmingham Children’s Hospital face battles that are steeper, scarier and far more relentless than any mountain on Earth. Their climb comes without preparation, without warning and without the option to walk away. It comes with hospital wards, treatments, uncertainty, fear and a level of bravery that most of us can only begin to imagine.

When we're struggling for breath on the mountain, we'll be thinking about the children fighting through treatments that take everything they have.

When our legs are aching and the summit feels impossibly far away, we'll be thinking about the families who find strength they never asked for, day after day.

And when we finally reach the top – if we're fortunate enough to do so – we'll remember that for many of these children and families, the climb continues long after ours is over.

That is why we're taking on this challenge.

Because no child should have to face a mountain like that without support.

Because Birmingham Children's Hospital provides hope, care and comfort when families need it most.

And because Carter's courage deserves more than admiration – it deserves action.

This challenge is the next chapter in the incredible journey of Carter the Brave, a fundraising movement spanning more than 10 years and raising over £650,000 for Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Carter was diagnosed with Leukaemia at just four years old and received treatment at Birmingham Children's Hospital for eight years. Today, Carter is thankfully in remission, but the mission of Carter the Brave remains the same: to make this journey easier for other children and families facing similar battles.

Since 2016, Carter the Brave has delivered an extraordinary impact, including funding seven revolutionary GameStations, providing 1,700 Amazon vouchers to families, contributing £165,000 towards Paediatric Cancer Research and funding Chemo CADD Pumps that allow children to receive treatment at home.

More recently, Carter the Brave has helped fund the new Birmingham Children's Hospital entrance, the on-site MediCinema and the CT Intervention Kit, which is helping clinicians achieve more successful tumour diagnoses.

Every penny raised through our Kilimanjaro challenge will go directly towards helping the children and families supported by Birmingham Children's Hospital.
