The annual ‘shave’ for a charity who put the spotlight on funding for the three biggest health issues facing men: mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
The first point is a very personal one, and makes me think back to an important moment in my past that has helped me grow as a person…
7 years ago, I reached the point where I didn’t see a future, and had decided to end my life. There was no catalyst, no reasoning - just a compete lack of self belief.
The moment had come, and by pure chance, Emma (my wife) calls me for a chat. That moment stopped my plans, and I carried on ‘as normal’...until I couldn’t hold it in anymore and told her what I had planned to do.
It was embarrassing and horrifying to speak about, but Emma encouraged me to seek a therapist - and it was the best decision I could’ve made. Just opening up freely, felt like a weight had lifted off my shoulders, and I had a new outlook on life.
Therapy doesn’t just mean seeking professional help though. Something as small as reaching out to a mate who will listen can ease that burden - it’s alright to not feel ok in yourself, and if you’re feeling low, reach out to someone.
…so I’m growing a ‘mo this November, to try and raise awareness and get blokes talking!
