Story
After a life-changing fall in 2022, I’m taking on three physical challenges to raise money for Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation, the volunteer team which rescued me and made my recovery possible.
In 2022, I fell 30 foot from a mountain.
The near-fatal accident left me with a broken back, a spinal cord injury and wheelchair-dependency post-paralysis. Following a lot of hard work, much luck and the continued support of others, I am back on my feet.
I've had a lot of help to finally be in a position where I can now give back. Without the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation, there wouldn't be a recovery story to tell. They reached me that day, stabilised me and got me off the mountain. They gave me hope when there was none.
I've spent the last four years trying to piece things back together. I'm not what I was but, with adaption, I can walk, swim and cycle. I can't move quickly but I can move.
This summer, I’m taking on three challenges:
A mountain hike
A triathlon
A coast-to-coast cycle
This isn’t a typical endurance challenge. I live with neurological limitations from the injury. Movement is restricted. Fatigue is real. Things most people take for granted, walking, balance, endurance, still require effort and intent. So that’s exactly why I’m doing this. This is about rebuilding distance, physically and mentally, from where I was.
Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation is made up entirely of volunteers. They turn up in extreme conditions, at any time of day, for people having the worst day of their lives. They did that for me.
This fundraiser is about making sure they can keep doing it for the next person. There was a version of me that didn’t think I’d get here. Didn’t think I’d walk properly again, let alone take something like this on.
If you can donate, thank you. It genuinely means so, so much. If you can’t, sharing this page helps more than you might think.
This is me choosing not to waste that second chance, Jamie
