CountrymenUK (Dorset).
Our club in Dorset was set up 10 years ago by Julie Plumley. Julie’s dad, John Stockley, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, which led to a series of events that saw the first Countrymen Club being established in Dorset.
John, a retired farmer, didn’t want to believe he was ill. He just wanted to live his life and always thought about the future. But his deteriorating health meant that he spent most of his time indoors and only got to see family members, which were mostly women.
!0 years on, many men from the local area benefit from sessions here on the farm. They help care for the animals, as well as tending the allotment and polytunnels, using their skills making crafts or just relaxing over a gate. They get back a sense of purpose regardless of their health concerns and added the benefit is that their wives and carers also get a few hours respite each week to recharge their own batteries. It is amazing to see how the men relax once they get on the farm and the banter is wonderful!
During lockdown, the mental health of many of our members deteriorated dramatically, but we managed to stay in touch with them all, offering reassurance and practical help in the form of food deliveries and kits for them to work on at home.
We now have vastly depleted funds. If this vital service is to continue we need your support.
Every penny raised will be invested in the running of this unique charity, let's see if we can raise a ton of money! Thank you
