This April, at the age of 60, I will be running my first marathon – the London Marathon – in memory of my beloved daughter Ella and to raise vital funds to support young people with cancer through Ella’s Legacy: Ella Dawson Foundation

Ella was just 24 when we lost her to leukaemia. Despite two years of brutal treatment, she never stopped envisioning a future where excellent medical care was supported with essential wellbeing support. Ella believed deeply in helping young people not just survive but live well through the emotional and physical challenges of a cancer diagnosis as a young person.

As a family, we witnessed her determination, passion, and extraordinary strength. Ella refused to be defined by her illness, choosing instead to live every single day with love, gratitude, and purpose.

Life without Ella is incredibly hard, but she continues to inspire us to do more, be more, and make a difference in her name.

Every day, 12 young people in the UK hear the devastating words, “You have cancer.” Their worlds, and those of their loved ones, are turned upside down, and fear, uncertainty and physical challenges take over life for months and years.

Ella’s vision has become a reality and in the 3 years since she died, the Ella Dawson Foundation has provided life-changing support to over 1,000 young people living with cancer.

This year is Ella’s 28th birthday. To honour her, I am setting myself the goal of raising £2,800, enough to fund more vital psychological, emotional, nutritional and well needed services that offer young people the support they so desperately need. Every single penny makes a real difference.

Running the marathon will undoubtedly be a huge physical and mental challenge, but every step of the way, I will be inspired by both of my incredible daughters. They’ve taught me to see the beauty and possibility in every single day, no matter what the circumstances.
