On the 18th December 2021 Carl went out cycling as he did most days, the difference was he never came home.Tragically Carl was involved in an accident when a pedestrian crossed in front of him causing him to brake heavily which led to catastrophic injuries and a cardiac arrest. Although the hospital staff eventually restarted Carl's heart and he was placed on life support his brain had been too starved of oxygen so in the early hours of the 22nd December Carl passed away just 59 years old and four months before he was planning to retire. Coming to terms with the sudden death of Carl has been incredibly hard to deal with, so to give me a focus and help me through this painful journey I decided to take on a challenge and raise some money for a bereavement charity, Winston's Wish. I wanted to do something significant so I am cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats a distance of 1009 miles over 14 days with 16,858 metres of ascent. I chose Winston's Wish as it supports children, young people and their families who are dealing with traumatic grief often through the sudden unexpected death of a close relative or friend. They also support professionals working with grieving children. £5 could provide four specialist publications which offer parents and professionals advice and guidance on how to help bereaved children cope with their grief. £8.50 can provide a child with a memory box that can be used to store treasured objects, helping them to remember their loved one in a way that is personal to them. £20 could cover the cost of operating the website for one day, including Help2MakeSense, a support forum for bereaved young people. Winston's Wish also train professionals and specialist volunteers, enabling them to support young people and their families in their grief. I appreciate times are difficult at the moment but if you are able to support me I would be most grateful.
