Cycling from London to Paris for Rafiki Thabo Foundation

Janet Hayes is raising money for Rafiki Thabo Foundation

Cycling from London to Paris · 12 September 2025

Our Director, Janet, her cycling buddy Mel, and Mel's daughter Emily will be taking on the epic challenge of cycling from London to Paris in September 2025 to raise funds to enable more lives in Africa to be transformed through education.

Story

Over the past 11 years of running Rafiki Thabo, I have been fortunate enough to have seen first hand the life changing impact our work has on some of the more than 800 children and young people we have supported through education in Kenya, Lesotho and Uganda - as well as on their families, communities and wider society.

So I am cycling from London to Paris to raise funds to make sure even more children and young people can experience this life-changing impact. If I reach my £1,500 target, that could pay for the entire secondary education of a child in Uganda or vocational training for 2 young people living with a disability in Kenya, enabling them to learn skills such as carpentry or catering so they can set up their own business. How amazing is that?

Of the scholars I have been fortunate enough to meet when visiting our programmes, these three particularly stuck with me:

Ayiesa who battled against all the odds to get an education and has worked his way up from cleaner to Kenya Treasury Official, as well as starting a few small businesses along the way, being a wonderful husband and father, co-running our partner organisation which supports children with cerebral palsy and mentoring and inspiring others to fight for an education;

Praise who overcame the stigma of losing her sight and the devastation of her father deserting the family as a result, to go on to excel so much at secondary school that she won a government scholarship to study Law at university. Her dream is to fight for the rights of people with disability in Uganda; and

Hannah who we supported through university and is now a successful business woman, donates school items to local children and is mum to a beautiful daughter who is now in school.

Anything you can donate to transform more lives through education will make such a difference to even more young lives in Africa. Thank you!
