Story

Our wonderful colleague Andrew sadly lost his beautiful wife Lizzie to Cancer in November 2023. Lizzie was always someone who lived life to the full, including living & working as a teacher in China before coming back home to continue teaching. In 2018, after buying a house with her partner Andrew, Lizzie was diagnosed with Stage 4 Bowel Cancer.

Over the next five years Lizzie went through over 60 rounds of chemo, hundreds of individual appointments and several major surgeries. Despite this, Lizzie still insisted on living her life to the fullest as much as possible, having quit her job she was able to get married, travel to places like Spain and Italy, take up painting, see the Killers live at St Marys and travel the length and breadth of the UK. Lizzie also took part in a documentary on her treatment at the Royal Marsden, including appearing on the famous BBC Breakfast red couch, where she spoke with passion. The documentary showed not just the hard times and difficult choices that living with Cancer bring, but also that joy can be had whilst living with cancer and the hope that there is for the future of cancer care.

All of this was only possible with the treatment and support provided by the Royal Marsden, a world leading cancer centre, which provided both expert and compassionate care.

Following Lizzie's sad passing in November 2023 Andrew is determined to give back, so that the patients who experience a similar journey to theirs can continue to be offered the most up-to-date treatments and benefit from continued lifesaving research.

The Event:

In order to honour Lizzie’s incredible legacy, her fighting spirit and her all round warmth, a group of us are planning to walk the five miles from the Brit Office at 122 Leadenhall Street to the Royal Marsden hospital in Chelsea.

We will be meeting at the foot of the Leadenhall building's escalators at 1.30pm on Friday 23rd February if you would like to join us!

The Charity:

“The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity raises money solely to support The Royal Marsden, a world leading cancer centre. We ensure our nurses, doctors and research teams can provide the very best care and develop life saving treatments, which are used across the UK and around the world. From funding state of the art equipment and groundbreaking research, to creating the very best patient environments, we will never stop looking for ways to improve the lives of people affected by cancer."
